THE VILLAGE SURGERY NEWSLETTER

April 2015 Surgery News from the Patients’ Participation Group

Online Patient Access

We have a new online system for ordering prescriptions and booking appointments. This improvement means our old online prescription ordering service is no longer available. Please register for the new system by completing the online form on www.southwatersurgery.co.uk (it’s in Prescriptions / Online Forms / Online Services) or ask at reception.

* If you have trouble with the online access, have you remembered to include https?

We are delighted to announce the appointment of two new surgery partners. Dr. Leonie Hyder and Dr. Daphne Coutroubis.

Dr. Hyder graduated from Nottingham University in 2001. She has been working as a GP partner in Crawley since finishing her training in 2006. Her special interests include: GP training, Mental Health and Core General practice. She lives in Horsham, has two young children and is looking forward to joining our team in June.

Dr. Coutroubis graduated from St. Batholomew’s and The London Medical Schools in 2006. Her special interests include: Women’s Health, in particular, Family planning, Child Health Surveillance and core General Practice. She hopes to become involved in training other Doctors who aspire to becoming GPs. In her spare time she cares for her four little girls and also runs a farm. She is fluent in Greek, Spanish, and French and is to join us in July.

A new Practice Nurse, Lisa Davis, has also recently joined the practice team. We now have a full compliment of Nurses.

The recently introduced Friends and Family Test has given the Surgery a 4* rating which is a good result. If you wish to score the surgery, please complete the questionnaire either on line from our website, or collect a hard copy from the waiting room.

Helping us to help you

Did you know that in March 2015 there were 111 appointments missed and that this equates to 18.5 hours of wasted doctor and nurse time. When someone misses an appointment it means someone else who needs that slot has missed out – and has to wait longer to see a doctor. Were you one of the people who failed to make your appointment? If you no longer need your appointment, please call us on 01403 730016. Please think of others. You can of course put the appointment on your Smart phone or Ipad, if you have one.

Help! I’m hurt!

Minor injuries such as cuts, sprains, strains, minor burns or stings are best dealt with by NHS walk in clinics, GP led health centres or minor injury units. Our nearest one is at Horsham Hospital (minor injuries). Opening times are Monday to Friday. 9a.m. to 5p.m. There is also a walk in centre at Crawley Hospital, which is open 24 hours 7days a week.

However, if you are seriously or badly hurt, then please go to A&E. Our nearest A&E units are at Redhill (East Surrey Hospital), Princess Royal at Haywards Heath, and Worthing Hospital. Call 999 if the patient has a potentially life threatening injury.

Keeping well?

Most of us only ever see a doctor when something goes wrong. As we get older, perhaps an MOT is no bad thing so we can ensure our faulty brakes or a squealing clutch has not been overlooked.

We offer free well patient checks for anyone between the age of 40 and 74 registered at the surgery. We assess your risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and stroke. This service excludes people with hypertension, diabetes or similar long term conditions and those taking Statins because they already have regular medical check-ups.

The well patient check involves a physical health check including blood pressure and cholesterol measurement, together with height, weight, BMI and general lifestyle advice. It gives you the opportunity to ask about any other health related concerns that you may have. This holistic approach is designed to give you support and advice to help you to make your own healthier lifestyle choices. Your appointment takes about 20 minutes with a specially trained Health Care Assistant. If any health issues come to light during the check, you will be referred to a doctor or nurse as appropriate. Please book your well person check at the surgery.

An update on the care.data plans

As you will have heard, this program is on hold for six months. We will tell you more when we know what is going to happen. Meanwhile, should you have any questions, please contact the patients information line on 0300 456 3531.

If you do not want your data collected, please write to Felicity Belkin, Practice Business Manager at the surgery.

Patient Participation Group

If you are interested in joining the PPG, please contact Felicity Belkin the Practice Business Manager who will be pleased to hear from you on 01403 730016. Please see the website www.southwatersurgery.co.uk for more information.

Out of Hours Help

For patients unable to attend surgery during core hours, we have special surgeries held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 18.30 – 19.30 and on two Saturday mornings a month, from 08.30 – 11.30. Appointments are pre-booked. The healthcare professional in attendance is a GP.

Otherwise, please dial 111 if you have an urgent but non-life threatening situation and need medical help or advice. In a life threatening situation call 999 for emergency assistance.

Do you care for someone with a long term condition?

If you care for, or help someone with an illness or disability, whether this is a partner, friend, or even a neighbour, then you are a carer.

We keep a register of our patients who care for others. This register helps us to acknowledge your needs as a carer and provide you with further information and support. Please complete a carer's form online (www.southwatersurgery.co.uk - see the Carers News page) or ask at the surgery reception desk.

Carers News is regularly updated on the website. It gives carers in and around Southwater as much local support information as possible including carer well being, where to find more help and useful contact numbers.

We welcome all feedback on Carers News and would be delighted to feature any relevant news items in the next issue. Please contact Felicity Belkin on: 01403 730016 to discuss in further detail.

Feedback and Comments:

The Surgery welcomes feedback on their services. They would be grateful for positive comments as well as helpful advice. This can be done via the Surgery Website www.southwatersurgery.co.uk or by writing a letter to the Surgery Manager. Most people are quick to criticise, a positive comment is always welcome!

Need some extra help?

Do you need occasional help in the home, help with some shopping, with transport for a few appointments or would you like someone to visit you? Southwater Neighbour Network might be able to help you. Also, if you are able to volunteer with any of the above, then please contact by phone 07766088967 or by email on swaternn@gmail.com or www.southwaternn.co.uk.
